The Top Six Clothing Items to Avoid Wearing at the Airport

The Top Six Clothing Items to Avoid Wearing at the Airport

The holiday season is here; with travel plans sorted, it’s time to pack. However, let’s not overlook the importance of the right airport outfit.

Apart from looking cute and comfortable, it’s crucial to consider its practicality for customs. After all, nobody wants to be held up at security when they can enjoy a pre-flight meal.

To ensure an easy journey, here are six clothing items to avoid wearing to the airport:

#1. Oversized Fashion

The airport is a busy place with a lot of people, so caution is required with your outfit. While maxi dresses, loose jackets, trousers, and hoodies offer comfort, especially on long-haul flights, they can lead to extended security checks.

Their ample space can make hiding things easier, causing screening delays. Oversized jumpers often need to be removed before walking through the scanner, consuming valuable time in a hurry.

Alternative: Pack your big jumper in your hand luggage and put it on the plane, or opt for sweaters, tops, and pants with an elastic waistband or high stretch content. These options offer comfort while maintaining a close fit.

#2. Shoes with Metal Details, Thick Soles, and Laces

You should wear a shoe that has straps or buttons. Most airports have strict regulations regarding shoes, particularly those with chunky soles that could conceal items or high-top sneakers that cover the ankles.

Metal details like studs or buckles often trigger alarms, requiring removal. Dealing with lace-up shoes can be exceptionally bothersome. Avoid wearing high heels to the airport because they’re not comfortable or fit for long flights.

Alternative: Choose simple loafers, ballerinas, espadrilles, or slip-on trainers without laces. These types of shoes are quick to put on and take off. In the best-case scenario, you might not need to remove them; have the soles checked after passing through the detector.

#3. Excessive Hair Accessories

Save elaborate hairstyles for when you’re not travelling by plane. Hairdos with multiple clips or a barrette can set off detectors during security checks, resulting in time-consuming removal.

Alternative: Keep your hair down or tie it in a loose ponytail for a hassle-free experience.

#4. Clothes with Numerous Pockets or Detailed Designs

Avoid fitting clothing that could be difficult to remove, such as a leather jacket with zippers, jeans with buttons, etc. While dresses with ample pockets, such as army and cargo pants, may be practical for travel, they are less suitable for flying. Zippers and metal details on such garments can trigger the alarm, and it’s easy to forget to remove lighters from pockets.

A tight cloth or anything difficult to remove may not be suitable. Remember, you’re travelling on a long flight and sitting for long hours; hence, a tight dress may influence your circulation due to changes in cabin pressure, etc.

Avoid overly warm clothing during winter travel, as it can cause sweating at airports and may cause clothing damage. Consider the temperature of the airport and plane for snowy destinations.

Alternative: Opt for sweatpants or track pants that offer comfort but have fewer pockets and intricate designs.

#5. Excessive Jewellery

If you are a big fan of statement jewellery, you should forgo it when travelling by plane. Rings, necklaces, bracelets, and large earrings made of silver, gold, or other metals can set off security alarms, leading to their removal.

If you prefer not to part with your jewellery during the journey, stick to non-metal accessories. Alternatively, please store your jewellery in a pouch and put it on upon reaching your destination.

#6. Strong Perfume

Although this tip won’t save you time, it could prevent headaches. During the holiday season, long security lines can lead to stale air. The combination of various fragrances may make you feel unwell, turning lines and flights into unpleasant experiences.

Alternative: Apply a small sample of your favourite fragrance after landing. It will help you feel fresher after a long flight and ensure a more pleasant experience.

Conclusion

Choosing the proper flying clothing saves time, provides comfort, and is more convenient. Keep these considerations in mind when choosing your outfit.

If you want to wear uncomfortable items, store them in your carry-on for luxury and appearance. It will allow you to fly in luxury while looking amazing upon arrival. Avoiding these six clothing items will enable you to breeze through customs and enjoy a stress-free airport journey.
