Azman Air Grounds Flights: Staff Unpaid as Maintenance Woes Strike

Surprisingly, Azman Air, a prominent regional airline, has boldly suspended its commercial operations. This decision has reverberated across the industry and left its staff facing an unexpected challenge.

The airline’s decision to suspend operations has been attributed to multiple factors, primarily revolving around the culmination of its Hajj operation and a temporary setback caused by the maintenance of its Boeing 737 aircraft. Sources reveal that the plane, a critical component of their fleet, is currently undergoing meticulous C-check maintenance. The company has had to wait patiently for its return, resulting in an unexpected operation halt.

In a circular bearing the signature of Magaji Mohammed Misau, the Human Resources Manager, dated August 3rd, 2023, it has been communicated that all staff, except for a select group of eight senior employees, are now on compulsory leave without pay. This circular, titled ‘Placement Of Leave Without Pay,’ clearly outlines the company’s predicament. “Our domestic operations have been temporarily paused due to the necessary maintenance checks being conducted on our aircraft,” the circular states.

The decision to place most staff on unpaid leave might raise eyebrows, but it’s important to note that this step has been taken to ensure the airline’s long-term stability. According to the circular, “Management assures you that this step has been taken to ensure that we can get back in the skies as soon as our aircraft are fully prepared.”

As this news rippled through the industry, Azman Air’s Public Relations Officer, Nurudeen Aliyu, provided further insight. He confirmed that the airline’s entire fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft is undergoing comprehensive maintenance, leading to the suspension of their domestic operations since April 18th, 2023. Despite this suspension, the airline has steadfastly paid its dedicated staff’s salaries.

Aliyu remarked, “Our commitment to safety and operational excellence has prompted this pause. Two of our aircraft are undergoing maintenance, while three more are scheduled for C-checks. The timeline for our return to full operations is October, as we anticipate completing the maintenance requirements by then.”

The financial implications of this decision are substantial, but it underscores Azman Air’s unwavering commitment to passenger safety and the integrity of its fleet. The management’s tough choice to temporarily suspend operations is a testament to their prioritisation of safety and adherence to the highest industry standards.

While passengers and aviation enthusiasts might be disappointed by this news, it’s crucial to remember that safety remains paramount. The skies await the return of Azman Air’s Boeing 737 aircraft, freshly maintained and ready to soar again. Until then, the airline’s workforce, despite the challenges they face, can be assured that their dedication is recognised and that they will return to their roles when the time is right.
