Aviation Crisis Looms Amid Forex Scarcity: Functional Aircraft Owned By Airlines Drop

Aviation Crisis Looms Amid Forex Scarcity: Functional Aircraft Owned By Airlines Drop

The Nigerian aviation industry is bracing for a potentially devastating crisis as the number of operational aircraft has plummeted due to the scarcity of foreign exchange required for crucial maintenance abroad and the exorbitant cost of aviation fuel.

Airlines have been grappling with the impact of the foreign exchange situation on their operations since 2020, but the situation has now reached a critical juncture.

The Impact of Foreign Exchange on Airlines

A striking example of the consequences of the forex scarcity unfolded when Emirates Airline suspended its flight operations in Nigeria in November 2022. This move was directly linked to the airline’s inability to repatriate over $85 million, which had been trapped with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Dire Consequences of Forex Scarcity

Mike Ojonugwa, a notable figure in the aviation industry, emphasized that the looming crisis is exacerbated by the fact that many airline operators are forced to resort to the black market to secure dollars for the maintenance of their fleets, a cost that many find unsustainable. As of October 19, the dollar was trading at an alarming N1,155 on the parallel market, exacerbating the challenges faced by airline operators.

Grounded Aircraft and Maintenance Woes

Ojonugwa shed light on the fact that Nigerian airline operators are currently grappling with grounded aircraft that urgently require overseas repairs. Regrettably, several carriers are unable to retrieve their planes sent for maintenance due to the severe lack of foreign exchange needed to settle the service costs.

Dwindling Forex Reserves and Government Inaction

The situation is further aggravated by the significant reduction in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s net forex reserves, which dropped to a mere $3.7 billion by the end of 2022, down from $14 billion in 2021. This sharp decline has made it nearly impossible for the CBN to address the mounting backlog of dollars owed to various airlines in the short term.

Urgent Measures for Industry Resilience

Ojonugwa underscored the urgent need for palliative measures to rescue the sector from the impending crisis. He stressed the critical absence of a maintenance hangar in Nigeria, a facility that the government must urgently prioritize. Furthermore, he emphasized that providing soft loans to airline operators could alleviate the financial burden they currently face, preventing further closures and job losses that would inevitably contribute to an increase in the country’s unemployment rate.
