The situation is further aggravated by the significant reduction in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s net forex reserves, which dropped to a mere $3.7 billion by the end of 2022, down from $14 billion in 2021. This sharp decline has made it nearly impossible for the CBN to address the mounting backlog of dollars owed to various airlines in the short term.

Ojonugwa underscored the urgent need for palliative measures to rescue the sector from the impending crisis. He stressed the critical absence of a maintenance hangar in Nigeria, a facility that the government must urgently prioritize. Furthermore, he emphasized that providing soft loans to airline operators could alleviate the financial burden they currently face, preventing further closures and job losses that would inevitably contribute to an increase in the country’s unemployment rate.
