The Do’s and Don’ts of Airplane Etiquette for a Seamless Flight

Flight inconveniences like delays and crowded planes are hard enough. However, rude and inconsiderate passengers can turn a flight into a disaster.

Consider this: behaving on a plane should be akin to being a guest in someone’s home. But courtesy might mean different things to different people. Once, I saw someone giving themselves a manicure, which felt a bit too much in such a confined space.

Essential Airplane Etiquette

Consumer Reports collaborated with flight attendants and etiquette experts to compile a definitive guide to unspoken rules during flights. Here’s what they suggest:

#1. Respect the Middle Seat Passenger

Passengers in the dreaded middle seat should have access to both armrests. It might be the only space they can claim, so allowing them this concession can make their journey a bit more bearable.

#2. Reclining: Yes, but with Consideration

Reclining your seat is within your rights, but ensure you’re not inconveniencing the person behind you, especially if they are tall. A polite inquiry before reclining can go a long way.

Remember, you’re sharing limited space, so don’t hog the overhead bins, use headphones for electronic devices, and avoid unpacking strong-smelling food. Also, keep your shoes on, please!

#3. Seat Switching and Chair Kicking

If someone wants to switch seats or is persistently kicking your chair, it’s acceptable to request that they stop politely.

Likewise, it’s okay to decline a seat switch, particularly if you have a specific reason for choosing your seat, like needing the window seat for better sleep. However, consider being flexible if the request is reasonable, like an aisle seat for your own, just one row back.

#4. Stay Calm, Stay Relaxed

Remember, it serves no purpose to get upset or angry. The more composed you are, the smoother your flight will be. This holds true not just in the air but also on the ground. If disruptions occur and tempers flare, it’s advisable not to take matters into your own hands. Instead, report the issue to a flight attendant for appropriate action.

Conclusion

Maintaining a respectful and considerate attitude during air travel can go a long way toward ensuring a pleasant journey for everyone on board. Follow these simple etiquette guidelines and contribute to a more harmonious and enjoyable flying experience for yourself and your fellow passengers.
